How long is ETIAS valid?
Your ETIAS travel authorization remains valid for 3 years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
**Standard validity**: The 3-year validity applies to most approved applications. During this period, you can make multiple trips to ETIAS-required countries without reapplying.
**Passport expiry consideration**: If your passport expires before the 3-year period ends, your ETIAS becomes invalid on that date. You will need to apply for a new ETIAS when you obtain a new passport.
**No extensions**: ETIAS authorizations cannot be extended. When your authorization expires or is about to expire, you must submit a new application.
**Multiple passports**: If you obtain a new passport while your ETIAS is still valid, you must apply for a new ETIAS linked to the new passport. The old authorization will no longer be usable.
The 90/180-day stay rule
ETIAS follows the standard Schengen short-stay rule: you may stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
**How it works**: The 180-day period is rolling, not calendar-based. At any point, authorities look back 180 days to count how many days you have spent in ETIAS-required countries.
**Cumulative calculation**: All days spent in any of the 30 ETIAS-required countries count toward your 90-day allowance. If you visit multiple countries, the days add up across all of them.
**Practical example**: If you spent 45 days in Europe from January 1 to February 14, and want to return on May 1, you would still have approximately 45 days remaining of your 90-day allowance within the relevant 180-day window.
**Exceeding the limit**: Overstaying your allowed time is a serious matter. It can result in fines, deportation, entry bans, and difficulties obtaining future travel authorizations or visas.
Multiple entry travel
Your ETIAS authorization allows unlimited entries during its validity period, subject to the 90/180-day rule.
**No entry limits**: There is no restriction on the number of times you can enter ETIAS-required countries. You may make as many trips as you wish within the stay limitations.
**Entry at any border**: You can enter through any external border crossing of the ETIAS area, whether air, sea, or land. Your authorization is valid regardless of your point of entry.
**Different countries**: You can enter through one country and exit through another. Your ETIAS is not limited to a specific route or destination.
**Short visits**: Brief visits of even one day count as entries and contribute to your 90-day allowance.
ETIAS approval vs entry permission
An approved ETIAS is a requirement for travel, but it does not guarantee admission to Europe.
**Pre-travel authorization**: ETIAS confirms you have been pre-screened and are authorized to travel. This check happens before you board your transportation to Europe.
**Border control decision**: The final entry decision rests with border officers at your point of arrival. They assess your overall eligibility based on multiple factors.
**What border officers check**: Officers may verify your ETIAS status, passport validity, return tickets, sufficient funds, accommodation bookings, and purpose of travel.
**Refusal at border**: Even with a valid ETIAS, entry can be refused if you do not meet all entry conditions. Common reasons include insufficient funds, unclear travel purpose, or missing supporting documents.
**Preparedness**: While ETIAS itself does not require supporting documents, having evidence of your travel plans, accommodation, and funds available at the border is advisable.
Renewing your ETIAS
When your ETIAS expires, you will need to submit a new application.
**New application required**: There is no renewal process. When your current ETIAS expires or your passport changes, you apply as if for the first time.
**Timing**: You can submit a new application before your current ETIAS expires. Having overlapping valid authorizations does not cause problems.
**Updated information**: Your new application must reflect your current circumstances. If any personal details have changed, provide the updated information.
**Processing time**: New applications typically process within minutes, just like original applications. However, always allow buffer time before travel.
**Fee applies**: The standard EUR 20 fee applies to each new application (subject to the same age exemptions).
