ETIAS at a glance
ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization system developed by the European Union. It will be mandatory for citizens of visa-exempt countries who wish to enter the Schengen Zone for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
Unlike a visa, ETIAS does not require an embassy visit, interview, or extensive documentation. The entire process is completed online and most applications are processed within minutes.
Why is ETIAS being introduced?
The EU is implementing ETIAS to strengthen border security while maintaining smooth travel for legitimate visitors. The system will pre-screen travelers before they arrive at European borders, helping to identify potential security, migration, or health risks.
ETIAS works alongside the existing Entry/Exit System (EES) to create a more comprehensive border management framework for the Schengen Area.
When does ETIAS start?
ETIAS is expected to become operational in the last quarter of 2026. Until then, visa-exempt travelers can continue to visit Europe without pre-travel authorization.
There will be a transition period during which ETIAS will be gradually phased in. Travelers are advised to monitor official EU channels for the exact launch date.
